Lawyer urges Davido to apologise to Governor Okpebholo over alleged WAEC result post
A legal practitioner and author, Timothy Tugbiyele, has called on Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, to apologise to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo over a social media post displaying the governor’s alleged West African Examinations Council (WAEC) result.
Tugbiyele made the call in a video while commenting on political exchanges ahead of the 15 August Osun State governorship election. Davido shared what appeared to be Okpebholo’s WAEC result on his Instagram Story shortly after the Edo governor mocked Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke for frequent public dancing while campaigning for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.
Okpebholo had said Adeleke danced before signing papers, before breakfast and before tea. Davido, who has been campaigning for his uncle, posted the alleged result without a caption.
Tugbiyele said Davido should not have responded personally. He argued that Adeleke could have replied through official channels or a commissioner rather than allowing a relative who is a singer to engage a sitting governor. He described the two men as occupying different social positions and said the publication was disrespectful. He recalled seeing photographs of Davido prostrating before elders and characterised him as a well-brought-up Yoruba man who should exercise humility and apologise.
Tugbiyele rejected the idea that everything is fair in politics when the exchange involves personal insults or disrespect to elders. He noted that a poor academic result at one stage of life does not define a person, citing his own experience of results that were not strong enough and a father who continued to encourage him. Okpebholo’s alleged result, he said, belongs to the past; the man is a governor today.
The controversy sits inside the wider Osun campaign, where Davido has openly supported Adeleke’s bid for a second term. Tugbiyele’s intervention frames the episode as a breach of status and decorum rather than legitimate political counter-punching. Whether Davido issues any apology will determine if the matter ends as a brief social-media exchange or continues as a point of contention between the singer and the Edo governor.
