LAWMA urges Lagos residents to dispose waste properly during Eid-el-Kabir

As Muslims across Lagos prepare to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has called on residents to ensure proper waste disposal to protect public health and environmental hygiene during and after the festivities.

Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, issued the advisory on Wednesday, warning that defaulters could face prosecution, including fines or imprisonment. He noted that LAWMA has made adequate arrangements to handle the anticipated increase in waste during the Sallah celebrations.

“Eid-el-Kabir is a time of joy and communal celebration, but we must not lose sight of our environmental responsibilities. Proper disposal of animal waste, food remnants, and packaging materials is essential to maintaining hygiene and public safety,” said Gbadegesin.

He assured residents that LAWMA personnel and Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators would be deployed to ensure timely waste removal across all designated city routes.

Gbadegesin also cautioned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse, particularly on road medians, drainage systems, and open spaces, stressing that such actions pose serious health risks and will attract severe penalties. He urged butchers and livestock traders to use only approved abattoirs and slaughter facilities to ensure sanitary practices.

LAWMA’s enforcement teams will be actively monitoring waste disposal activities during and after the festive period to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

“We appeal to residents to bag their waste properly, use covered bins, and cooperate with PSP operators for effective waste evacuation. Environmental cleanliness is not just LAWMA’s responsibility—it’s a collective duty,” he added.

World Environment Day 2025: Lawma joins global call to end plastic pollution

In a related development, LAWMA participated in the global observance of World Environment Day 2025, celebrated annually on June 5. This year’s theme, “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution,” highlights the urgent need for sustainable solutions to the growing plastic waste crisis.

Dr. Gbadegesin stated that the theme aligns with LAWMA’s commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally responsible Lagos.

“Environmental restoration starts with small, consistent actions. We are working with schools, communities, market associations, and religious groups to promote grassroots awareness and behavioral change,” he said.

LAWMA has rolled out clean-up and advocacy campaigns encouraging recycling, proper waste separation, and discouraging street dumping. Gbadegesin urged all stakeholders to adopt environmentally friendly practices to support a greener future.

“This World Environment Day should be a wake-up call for everyone to reflect on the consequences of environmental neglect. Let us work together to restore and protect the ecosystem that sustains our lives and livelihoods,” he concluded.
