Lagos govt assures host communities on new dump Sites, moves toward sustainable waste management

The Lagos State Government has assured residents that the establishment of new dump sites across the state will not pose any problems to host communities. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, gave the assurance on Saturday during an inspection of the Olusosun and Soluos 2 and 3 landfill sites.
Wahab said the state was transitioning from a linear waste management model to a more sustainable system designed to minimise the volume of waste ending up in landfills. He explained that the new approach would prioritise recycling, composting, and energy conversion.
According to him, Lagos now sees waste as a resource. He stated that a significant portion of collected waste would be recycled, while some would be converted into compost fertiliser. He added that companies such as Lafayette and waste harvesters would extract combustible waste for energy production.
Wahab noted that only a minimal amount of waste would eventually be taken to landfill sites after processing, stressing that the new system would make waste disposal more environmentally friendly and reduce the burden on host communities.
