Kano State government orders investigation into death of two students at Bichi school

The Kano State Government has launched a full-scale investigation into the deaths of two students at the Government Boarding Secondary School in Bichi.

The deceased, identified as Hamza Idris-Tofawa and Umar Yusuf-Dungurawa, reportedly died after being attacked by fellow students using local metal objects called “Gwale-Gwale,” allegedly as a form of punishment.

State Commissioner for Education, Ali Haruna Makoda, directed an immediate and transparent inquiry into the incident. Speaking through the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Bashir Baffa, Makoda assured that justice would be served.

“This is a tragic and unfortunate incident. The Kano State Government is committed to a thorough, fair, and transparent investigation to uncover the truth and ensure justice for all parties involved,” he said.

Preliminary reports indicate that the two students were punished by senior students for an alleged offence, which led to their deaths.

Baffa, who visited the school on behalf of the ministry, warned students against taking the law into their own hands. “Students should always report issues to school authorities for appropriate action,” he advised.

The commissioner extended condolences to the families of the victims, praying for their souls to rest in peace.

“On behalf of the Kano State Government, Ministry of Education, and the good people of Kano State, we offer our deepest condolences to the families and pray that Almighty Allah grants them Jannatul Firdaus,” he said.

The Director of the Kano State Senior Secondary School Management Board, Abbas Abdullahi, called the incident disturbing and urged students to act responsibly.

Relatives of the victims, including Ibrahim Yusuf-Dungurawa and Malam Idris Garba-Tofawa, called on the government to ensure justice and prevent similar tragedies in the future. While Malam Idris accepted the loss as God’s will, he pleaded for measures to avoid recurrence.

The government has promised to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the facts behind the deaths.
