Headline inflation slows to 22.22% in June as food inflation rises

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced on Wednesday that Nigeria’s headline inflation rate eased by 0.75 percentage points to 22.22 percent in June 2025, down from 22.97 percent in May.

This marks the third consecutive month of decline since April, when the inflation rate slowed to 23.71 percent, the Bureau revealed in its Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for June.

However, food inflation bucked the trend, rising by 0.83 percentage points to 21.97 percent in June from 21.14 percent in May. The NBS attributed the month-on-month increase in food inflation to higher average prices of key items including dried green peas, fresh pepper, white dried shrimps, crayfish, fresh meat, fresh tomatoes, plantain flour, and ground pepper.

According to the report, “In June 2025, the headline inflation rate eased to 22.22 percent relative to the May 2025 rate of 22.97 percent.” The Bureau noted the decrease of 0.75 percentage points compared to May.

On food inflation, the NBS stated, “The food inflation rate in June 2025 was 21.97% year-on-year, which is 18.93 percentage points lower than the 40.87% recorded in June 2024.” The significant year-on-year decline is mainly due to a change in the base year used for calculations.

Nevertheless, on a month-on-month basis, food inflation rose to 3.25 percent in June, up by 1.07 percentage points from 2.19 percent in May. This increase was driven by rising prices in several key food products.

Regionally, the highest year-on-year food inflation rates in June were recorded in Borno (47.40%), Ebonyi (30.62%), and Bayelsa (28.64%). Meanwhile, Katsina (6.21%), Adamawa (10.90%), and Sokoto (15.25%) saw the slowest increases.

For month-on-month food inflation, June’s highest rates were in Enugu (11.90%), Kwara (9.97%), and Rivers (9.88%). Conversely, Borno (-7.63%), Sokoto (-6.43%), and Bayelsa (-6.34%) experienced declines in food inflation on a month-on-month basis, the NBS added.
