Justice Ishaq Bello warns young lawyers against misconduct

A former Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Justice Ishaq Bello, has cautioned young lawyers to steer clear of misconduct that could cost them their legal careers.

Speaking at the inaugural seminar organised by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Mentorship Committee, Justice Bello warned new wigs against engaging in unethical practices that could land them before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC).

“You can be stopped from practicing law if you engage in unwholesome practices,” he said, sharing insights from his early years in the profession. “I hope we will not meet at the LPDC. You have qualified as a lawyer, but you can be stopped from practicing.”

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the NBA Mentorship Committee and Attorney-General of Ondo State, Kayode Ajulo, SAN, praised NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe for initiating the programme aimed at guiding young lawyers on the path to professional success.

“This mentorship programme is not only for new wigs—it’s for all lawyers, especially those aspiring to be great in the profession,” Ajulo said. “After graduating from law school, you need mentorship to progress and achieve success.”

Ajulo, who is the first chair of the newly formed Mentorship Committee, described the seminar as a crucial platform to shape the next generation of legal practitioners and strengthen ethical standards within the bar.
