Baba-Ahmed warns against flawed 2027 elections, says Nigeria risks major crisis

As conversations deepen over the credibility of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former political adviser to the Vice President, has issued a stern warning, saying anything less than a fully transparent electoral process could plunge the country into serious turmoil.

In a post on his verified X account on Monday, Dr. Baba-Ahmed urged Nigeria’s political leaders and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to pay attention to the growing public concern over the integrity of the upcoming polls.

“Voices are being raised regarding integrity of the 2027 elections. Our leaders and INEC should listen. Anything short of the most transparent elections will produce neither winners nor losers. Rigging will risk plunging this country into its worst crises. No one wants that,” he wrote.

His comments come amid legislative moves by the House of Representatives to amend the Electoral Act, with a proposal that all five elections—presidential, senatorial, House of Representatives, governorship, and House of Assembly—be held on a single day in 2027.

If adopted, the reform would grant INEC the power to conduct all elections simultaneously, a move advocates say could cut costs and reduce voter fatigue, but which also raises questions about logistics and fairness.

Dr. Baba-Ahmed’s warning adds to the growing call for electoral reforms aimed at ensuring credibility and preventing post-election unrest.
