It’s time for change – Gareth Southgate calls it quits

England manager Gareth Southgate has stepped down.

The Three Lions boss ended the chapter after nearly eight years of being in charge of one of the most popular national teams in world football.

The consensus around Southgate’s time in charge may be unclear, with some feeling that he didn’t do enough with the talent he had at his disposal, while others will look back on his tenure and note – rightly – that he reached the final of the Euros in consecutive tournaments, though never winning it.

Southgate was first put in temporary charge of the Three Lions in September 2016, but after impressing his bosses, he was permanently appointed in November of the same year.

He managed England at the Russia 2018 World Cup, reaching the semifinal of the competition and getting knocked out by Croatia. He also managed the Three Lions at the 2022 World Cup, losing 2-1 to France, again in the semifinal.

The UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has thanked him for his service to England as a player and manager.
