INEC says only Nigerians 18+ can register to vote

No early registration for underage voters

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed that only Nigerians who are 18 years and older are eligible to register and vote — no exceptions.

This was confirmed by Yobe State’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, during a visit to the Emir of Bade, Alhaji Abubakar Umar-Suleiman, in Gashua on Thursday.

The Emir had asked whether 16 or 17-year-olds could pre-register now if they’ll be 18 by 2027. The REC’s response was clear: “Only eligible citizens of 18 years and above are allowed to register and vote under the Electoral Act.”

Voter registration is now open — both online and offline

Abdullahi stressed the importance of voter registration in ensuring fair and credible elections, and asked for the Emir’s help in encouraging civic participation across his community.

He revealed that online registration began on August 18, while physical registration at INEC offices across Yobe’s 17 LGAs will begin on August 25. Both online and offline registration will run for one year.

Who should register?

The REC outlined the key groups eligible for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR):

  • Nigerians who have never registered before

  • Citizens who have just turned 18

  • People with damaged or lost PVCs

  • Voters who want to change their polling unit
