INEC assures Osun residents of credible election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has promised a transparent and peaceful governorship election in Osun State come August 15. The new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Oluwatoyin Babalola, gave this assurance during a meeting in Osogbo on Tuesday.

Protesters, including market women and civil society groups, had gathered at the commission’s office to express concern over recent staff changes. They specifically questioned the transfer of the former REC, Mutiu Agboke, fearing it could lead to election manipulation.

Commission pledges to uphold vote integrity

Speaking through representatives, Babalola told the crowd that every single vote cast by residents would count. She emphasized that the commission has already put comprehensive arrangements in place to ensure a conclusive and fair process.

The new REC acknowledged that the fears of the residents are understandable given the high stakes of the upcoming poll. She promised to uphold the integrity of the commission and remain neutral throughout the electoral cycle.

Protesters warn against political bias

During the demonstration, several artisans and community leaders appealed to the commission to remain completely transparent. They advised the new REC not to work in favor of any political party or compromise the democratic process.

Musa Abdulsalam, Chairman of the Coalition of Concerned Nigerian Citizens (CCNC), officially submitted a petition to the officials. The protesters insisted that the conduct of the election must reflect the true will of the people without external interference.
