Gunmen kill two police officers, abduct Chinese national and Nigerian in Kwara mining site attack

Unidentified gunmen killed two mobile police officers and abducted a Chinese national along with a Nigerian worker on Wednesday evening at a mining facility in Oreke-Oke-Igbo, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
According to local sources, the assailants—believed to have prior knowledge of the security detail—ambushed the officers from behind, shooting them multiple times before abducting the two workers. The attackers also took away the rifles of the slain officers.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Toun Ejire-Adeyemi. She said the attack occurred around 6:30 p.m. on June 4, 2025.
The two officers killed were identified as ASP Haruna Watsai and Inspector Tukur Ogah, both attached to the 45 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Abuja. They were on official protective duty at the site when the attack happened.
The kidnapped individuals have been identified as Mr. Sam Xie Wie, a Chinese national, and Mr. David Adenaiye, a Nigerian from Kogi State, both of whom were working at the mining facility.
The police statement read:
“The Kwara State Police Command confirms a deadly attack and abduction incident that occurred on June 4, 2025, at about 1830hrs at a mining site in Oreke-Oke-Igbo, Ifelodun LGA. A group of unidentified armed assailants invaded the site, tragically killing ASP Haruna Watsai and Inspector Tukur Ogah. The attackers also carted away the rifles of the deceased officers.”
The statement continued:
“In addition to the killings, the assailants abducted Mr. Sam Xie Wie and Mr. David Adenaiye. The Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, strongly condemns this brutal act and assures that tactical and intelligence-led operations are already underway to rescue the victims and apprehend the perpetrators.”
The police urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding while calling for public cooperation in providing credible information to aid the investigation. The Command emphasized its ongoing collaboration with other security agencies and community stakeholders to prevent similar incidents in the future.
