Governor Umo Eno defects from PDP to APC in Akwa Ibom

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection took place on Friday in Uyo, the state capital, just days after the governor hinted at his plans to switch parties. Speaking at a town hall meeting in Ikot Abasi earlier in the week, Eno declared, “It is time to move,” adding that aligning Akwa Ibom with the APC-led federal government was a strategic step.

Governor Eno said the decision followed extensive consultations with political stakeholders and community leaders.

To mark the defection, several APC governors traveled to Akwa Ibom to welcome Eno into the party. Among them were Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State; Bassey Otu of Cross River; Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos; and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun.

Also present were Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Monday Okpebholo of Edo, and Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi.

Governor Eno’s defection is seen as a significant political shift in Akwa Ibom, a state long considered a PDP stronghold.
