Popular actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has revealed that the ₦1.8 billion grossed by her latest movie, Everybody Loves Jenifa, does not go entirely to her.

In a social media post, Akindele humorously explained that multiple parties, including cinemas, tax authorities, and distributors, all take a share of the earnings.

“I beg no be only me get the ₦1.8 billion o!!! Cinema go collect, tax go collect, distributor go collect!!!! Maybe when I get to ₦2 billion, I fit settle. So pls go see #ELJthemovie in cinemas and take us to ₦2 billion naira. Thank you,” she wrote in pidgin English.

Akindele, widely regarded as Nigeria’s box office queen, also encouraged her fans to help push the movie past the ₦2 billion mark.

Meanwhile, a report by FilmOne, a movie distribution company, listed Funke Akindele as the highest-grossing lead actress of 2024.

She was followed by Wunmi Toriola, whose film Queen Lateefah secured second place. Toyin Abraham ranked third with Alakada Bad and Boujee, while Tomike Adeoye and Eniola Ajao took fourth and fifth places with Ajosepo and Beast of Two Worlds: Ajakaju, respectively.

Others in the top ten included Kehinde Bankole (Funmilayo Ransome Kuti), Adunni Ade (Lakatabu), Uche Nwaefuna (Thinline, Silent Intruder, The Betrayed), Regina Daniels, and Gbugbemi Ejeye (Farmer’s Bride).

Akindele’s Everybody Loves Jenifa continues to break records, reinforcing her status as one of Nigeria’s most successful filmmakers.
