Ayra Starr becomes first Nigerian woman to earn RIAA diamond certification

Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has made history as the first Nigerian woman to earn a RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) Diamond certification.

The 22-year-old star achieved this milestone with her hit song “Santa”, which sold over 10 million units in the United States, securing the prestigious certification. This achievement marks a significant moment for both Ayra Starr and African music on the global stage.

To earn an RIAA Diamond certification, an artist must sell over 10 million units of a song in the United States, specifically within the Latino market. Additionally, the song must feature a blend of Spanish and English lyrics, with influences from genres such as Afrobeats and Reggaeton.

“Santa,” which features Puerto Rican artist Rauw Alejandro and Jamaican singer Rvssian, was released in 2024 as part of Ayra Starr’s second album, “The Year I Turned 21”. The album, much like her debut, “Young and Dangerous”, has been highly successful.

With this remarkable achievement, Ayra Starr continues to solidify her position as a global superstar, showcasing the international reach of Afrobeats.

Recently, Ayra Starr captivated fans on Instagram with a video where she played and sang on the keyboard, leaving fans and fellow artists in awe of her talents. Among those who praised her performance was DJ Cuppy (Florence Otedola), who lauded Ayra’s “pure talent.” Other colleagues in the music industry also hailed the “Rush” crooner’s impressive display of musical skills.

Ayra Starr’s journey continues to break boundaries and inspire aspiring artists worldwide, as she cements her place at the forefront of global music.
