Death toll rises to 3 in Kano building collapse
The death toll from the building collapse in Nomansland, Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State, has increased to three following the recovery of another body.
Earlier, two fatalities were reported along with two people who sustained injuries. The new death toll was confirmed by Dr. Nuraddeen Abdullahi, the Kano Territorial Coordinator for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
Dr. Abdullahi stated on Thursday, September 5, “The search and rescue team has recovered one more body from the rubble of the collapsed building. We are still searching for one more victim who might be trapped.”
He added that the rescue operation is ongoing and that they are investigating whether the missing person may have fallen into nearby water due to the heavy rain. “We have asked the Kano State Fire Service to dive into the water to check for the missing person’s body. We have also notified the Emir of Water (Sarkin Ruwa) to see if the water has carried the body away,” Abdullahi said.
The collapse occurred around 2 a.m. on Thursday, September 5, while the victims were asleep. It was caused by the heavy rainfall that started on Wednesday night and continued into Thursday morning.
