China pledges to work with Nigeria on zero-tariff implementation for Africa

China has reaffirmed its commitment to work with Nigeria to implement zero-tariff measures for the 53 African countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations, a major trade initiative announced by President Xi Jinping last month.
The announcement was made by Yang Jianxing, Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy and Director of the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, during the “China-Nigeria Good Partners—Celebration of International Taijiquan Day” held in Abuja on Wednesday.
Marking 2026 as the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Nigeria and the “China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges,” Jianxing highlighted the deepening political trust, growing economic cooperation, and expanding cultural ties between the two nations.
“China is willing to work with Nigeria to ensure that this major initiative is implemented and takes effect as soon as possible, using tariff reductions to boost trade, multiply people’s livelihoods, and contribute to Nigeria’s economic and social development,” he said, emphasizing the need to build exchange platforms and strengthen cultural links.
The event also saw remarks from Shehu Dikko, who noted that it underscored the intersection of sport, culture, and diplomacy. “It’s a convergence of culture, history, education, health, and lifestyle… we will continue to collaborate to advance the mutual relationship between Nigeria and China,” he said.
Permanent Secretary of the Social Development Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, Olubunmi Olowokere, highlighted the health and lifestyle benefits of Tai Chi, saying it offers “a powerful antidote” in a fast-paced world and aligns with the government’s focus on public welfare, youth development, and care for the elderly.
The zero-tariff plan follows President Xi’s message to the 39th African Union Summit last month, aimed at boosting trade, improving livelihoods, and enhancing cooperation between China and African nations.
