Carragher advises Alexander-Arnold on Ballon d’Or aspirations

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has delivered a stark reminder to Trent Alexander-Arnold, a transfer target for Real Madrid, about the challenges of winning the Ballon d’Or while playing at Anfield.

Carragher pointed out that most Ballon d’Or winners have either played for Real Madrid or Barcelona, suggesting that the Liverpool full-back might need to reconsider his ambitions. Alexander-Arnold had recently expressed to Sky Sports his desire to become the first full-back to win the prestigious award.

However, Carragher believes that remaining at Liverpool could limit Alexander-Arnold’s chances of achieving that goal. In an interview with Tribal Football, he stated, “I don’t care; he can try to win the Ballon d’Or. Nothing wrong with ambition, but my first thought when I read that was, ‘You’re not going to win the Ballon d’Or as a right back for Liverpool.’”

He continued, “Ballon d’Or winners normally play for Real Madrid or Barcelona. The vast majority, the players in the world go.”

Carragher also noted the choice Alexander-Arnold made when asked about his ultimate ambitions, which included the Ballon d’Or, saying, “I think he was asked about winning the World Cup, Champions League, or Ballon d’Or, and he chose the Ballon d’Or, which I think was a bit strange or bizarre because I’d always pick World Cup or Champions League; it’s a team game.”

Despite his reservations, Carragher acknowledged Alexander-Arnold’s potential, adding, “But yeah, he’s got massive ambition and why not? You only get one career; he is a unique full-back; he is absolutely amazing.”
