American rapper Cardi B has been cleared of assault and battery charges in a civil case brought against her by former security guard, Emani Ellis, with a unanimous jury ruling she is not liable.
Ellis had sued the “Bodak Yellow” star for $24 million, alleging that Cardi B physically assaulted her, spat on her, and used racial slurs during a 2018 altercation at the rapper’s obstetrician’s office. The plaintiff claimed the incident left her with a facial injury.
Cardi B, who testified last week, denied the allegations, insisting that while she exchanged words with Ellis, she never touched or spat on her. The rapper explained that the confrontation arose because Ellis was allegedly recording her and publicizing her doctor’s visit during her pregnancy with her first child.
Following the verdict, Ellis told reporters she was not disappointed by the outcome but satisfied she was able to present her case in court. Her lawyer, however, confirmed that they intend to file an appeal.
Cardi B, relieved by the decision, has vowed to countersue anyone who files what she described as “nefarious” lawsuits against her in the future.
