Bwacha declares 2027 governorship bid, decries rising hardship in Taraba

Former senator representing Taraba South Senatorial District, Emmanuel Bwacha, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Taraba State, citing worsening living conditions and increased hardship among residents.

Bwacha made the declaration on Thursday in Jalingo, stating that the growing economic challenges in the state have deepened suffering across communities and that remaining silent would amount to complicity.

“Hardship has deepened, and the suffering of our people has increased. Remaining silent in such circumstances would amount to complicity,” he said.

The former lawmaker alleged a breakdown in governance in the state, pointing to what he described as a lack of transparency, fiscal irresponsibility, and disregard for the rule of law. He also raised concerns over the state’s rising debt profile, claiming it had increased from about N237 billion in 2023 to over N1 trillion.

Bwacha pledged to restore transparency, accountability, and development if elected, noting that his earlier reluctance to run again was based on expectations that governance would improve. However, he argued that conditions have instead deteriorated.

He further criticised the state of infrastructure, describing it as failing, and highlighted challenges in the education sector, insecurity, and declining agricultural productivity.

Referencing the administration of former governor Danbaba Danfulani Suntai, Bwacha said the state was once on a path of progress but had since declined due to political instability.

He called on residents to reject divisive politics based on ethnic and religious differences and to work together toward shared development goals.

His comments come amid ongoing concerns over economic conditions and governance in Taraba State, with stakeholders continuing to call for measures to address the challenges affecting residents.
