Burkina Faso releases 11 Nigerian military personnel and aircraft

Detained officers and NAF C-130 aircraft cleared after emergency landing

Burkina Faso has officially released 11 Nigerian military personnel and their aircraft following their detention in the country.

The military personnel, comprising two crew members and nine passengers, were held after their Nigerian Air Force (NAF) C-130 aircraft made an unscheduled landing at the Bobo-Dioulasso airfield. Ouagadougou authorities had initially described the landing as unauthorized entry into their airspace, triggering a security protocol.

The incident occurred as the aircraft was en route to Portugal for what Nigerian authorities described as a technical emergency landing. The military personnel were detained for questioning amidst suspicion that the flight might be connected to the recent failed coup attempt in the Benin Republic. Following a period of investigation, the personnel were cleared of any wrongdoing and have safely returned to Nigeria.

Unscheduled landing sparks security response in ouagadougou

Nigerian officials maintained that the aircraft made a technical emergency landing, strictly following established international aviation safety procedures. However, Burkinabe authorities insisted that the plane entered their national airspace without prior authorization or clearance. This breach immediately prompted an urgent security response from the government in Ouagadougou.

Emile Zerbo, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Territorial Administration, stated that the authorities were acting strictly in accordance with national security protocols to protect the country’s sovereignty. The tension was heightened due to the regional political climate and the recent instability observed across the West African sub-region. The incident underscores the fragility of relations between some member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

Alliance of sahel states calls incident an unfriendly act

The detention and subsequent release were followed by a joint declaration from the military governments of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, who are members of the newly formed Alliance of Sahel States (AES). The bloc called the unscheduled landing a significant breach of their sovereign airspace and labeled the entire episode as an “unfriendly act.” This strong diplomatic language highlights the heightened state of alert in the region.

The AES further stated that the incident had compelled their respective air forces to be placed on high alert status. The political bloc, which recently announced its withdrawal from ECOWAS, views any unannounced military movement across its borders with extreme suspicion. This is particularly sensitive given the current geopolitical tensions following the military takeovers in the three nations.

Nigerian air force emphasizes safety protocols and respect shown

Despite the detention, the Nigerian Air Force emphasized that its crew members followed all necessary international aviation safety procedures during the emergency landing. The NAF also highlighted that its personnel were treated respectfully by the Burkinabe authorities during the period of their detention. This suggests a professional handling of the situation despite the initial confusion and security concerns.

The episode adds another layer of tension to the already strained diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the AES bloc. The release of the personnel and the aircraft, however, is seen as a positive step towards de-escalation and resolving the issue through diplomatic channels. Both countries remain committed to ensuring the safety of their citizens while adhering to international sovereignty laws.
