Bode George urges PDP elders to act as party faces crisis

On Thursday, November 21, Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed deep concern about the current state of the opposition party, stating that “all is not well” due to the selfish interests of some members. Speaking at a news conference to mark his 79th birthday in Lagos, George called on PDP elders to take action to rescue the party ahead of its upcoming National Convention.

He explained that while the party leadership has been making efforts to ensure unity and inclusiveness, some individuals, whom he referred to as “desperados,” are working to undermine these efforts. George warned that the party’s founding members, if they were still alive, would be deeply saddened to see the PDP in its current state, reduced to a mere shadow of its former self due to the actions of a few self-interested individuals.

The PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) member also criticized certain party members for allegedly working with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in preparation for the 2027 elections. He called this behavior “disheartening and pitiable,” especially coming from those who were supposed to be loyal to the party.

“As a loyal party man who lives, thinks, talks, breathes and defends PDP, I have never left this party since it was formed. So today gives me a great opportunity to deliberate on the future of our party,” George said.

He further expressed concern about the PDP’s future, stating, “Our party is derailing.” He also emphasized that the crisis within the PDP has compounded the challenges facing Nigeria, particularly in terms of its socio-economic problems.

George raised the alarm that if critical issues within the party were not urgently addressed, the PDP would face a dangerous crisis that could hinder its chances of challenging the APC in the 2027 elections. He called for these issues to be tackled during the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.

Despite the challenges, George expressed his belief that the PDP is the only party capable of saving Nigeria, and stressed the need for the party to be united and ready to lead the country forward. He warned against allowing disloyal elements to use the PDP platform for their selfish motives, saying that disloyalty is a serious offense within the party.
