Bandits demand ₦30m over kidnapped UNIJOS student

A wave of fear and outrage has gripped Nigerians following the emergence of a disturbing video showing a kidnapped student of the University of Jos (UNIJOS). The victim, identified as John Arum, fell into the hands of armed bandits while traveling along the notorious Kaduna–Jos highway.

The kidnappers are reportedly demanding a ransom of ₦30 million to secure his release. This incident highlights the worsening insecurity on major Nigerian highways, where commuters now travel in constant fear of abduction.

Captors share torture videos in class group chat

In a sadistic twist, the abductors allegedly used the victim’s phone to record videos of him being tortured. They then shared the harrowing footage directly into his class group chat, exposing his coursemates to his distress.

The video shows the student pleading for his life while being subjected to severe physical abuse. A coursemate, Ezikima Asunga, confirmed the incident and raised concerns that the family might not even be aware of the abduction yet.

Nigerians condemn the lack of security response

The footage has triggered widespread condemnation on social media, with many users expressing anger over the brazenness of the attackers. Observers pointed out that the kidnappers were not masked in the video, raising questions about why they have not been apprehended.

Citizens are calling on the police and military to act swiftly to rescue John Arum and bring the perpetrators to justice. Many Nigerians now describe the frequency of these kidnappings as a national emergency that requires immediate intervention.
