Atiku denies plans to step aside for another presidential aspirant

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed reports suggesting that he intends to step aside for another presidential candidate, calling such claims false and misleading.
Clarification from Atiku’s media adviser
The clarification was made by Atiku’s Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, in a statement issued on Thursday, October 2, 2025. The statement followed widespread reactions to a recent BBC Hausa interview granted by Atiku, where some media outlets misinterpreted his comments.
Ibe explained that both the video and transcripts of the interview, available in Hausa and English, were carefully reviewed. He confirmed that “at no point did the former Vice President expressly state, suggest, or even imply that he intends to step down for anyone.”
Atiku’s actual position on young aspirants
According to the statement, Atiku’s message focused on encouraging the participation of young people in the presidential race. He emphasized that young candidates, along with other prospective aspirants, are free to join the contest.
“Atiku Abubakar clearly and unambiguously said that if a young candidate were to emerge through a competitive primary, he would readily support such a candidate without any hesitation,” the statement added.
Criticism of media misinterpretation
Paul Ibe criticized some media outlets for distorting Atiku’s words, cautioning against stretching interpretations to the point of mischief. “While interpretative journalism is a legitimate aspect of reporting, stretching interpretation to the point of mischief is unacceptable and must not be encouraged,” he stated.
This clarification aims to set the record straight amid speculation about Atiku’s intentions in the presidential race, reinforcing his commitment to a fair and competitive primary process.
