Atiku calls for united opposition to take on APC in 2027

Opposition must regroup, says former VP
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is urging Nigeria’s opposition parties to come together ahead of the 2027 general elections to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

This comes after the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum declared that the opposition is currently fragmented and needs to unify to stand a real chance.

A warning against one-party rule
Speaking through his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku welcomed the forum’s call for unity, describing it as a patriotic move to save Nigeria from drifting into a one-party system under the APC-led government.

“What they’ve said reflects a deep sense of patriotism,” Ibe told Vanguard. “Unless the opposition is united, there’s no viable platform to remove the APC.”

He added that the Tinubu administration appears to be pushing Nigeria toward a one-party state—something he said poses a real threat to democracy.

A chance to reset leadership and governance
Ibe stressed that Nigerians are growing increasingly frustrated with the current state of the country and are ready to rally behind a strong, united alternative.

“The people are available and willing to support the opposition—but the opposition must get its act together first,” he said.

He emphasized that any successful attempt to replace the APC must be rooted in patriotism, unity, and a clear commitment to improving governance.

“The time to act is now”
The Southern and Middle Belt leaders have indicated their willingness to work with the opposition, and Atiku’s camp believes this is a sign that momentum can be built—if opposition parties seize the moment.

“It’s not just about defeating APC,” Ibe said. “It’s about rebuilding Nigeria. And that starts with strong, united leadership that puts the country first.”
