Army arrests suspect in FUNAAB student’s murder, hands him to Police
The Nigerian Army has apprehended Ayomide Adeleye, 23, the prime suspect in the murder of Christiana Idowu, a 300-level student from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State.
On Thursday, September 5, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed that the Army handed over Adeleye to them. Idowu was kidnapped by suspected abductors along the Ikorodu-Yaba Road in Lagos State on Monday, August 19.
Lagos Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the handover in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle @benHundeyin, stating: “23-year-old Ayomide Adeleye has been handed over to #LagosPoliceNG by 9 Brigade #HQNigerianArmy. The handover took place today, September 5, at about 2 p.m. Investigation is ongoing.”
The case has sparked significant outrage across Nigeria, especially on social media. Many Nigerians are demanding justice for Christiana, with the hashtag #JusticeForChristianah trending on Twitter.
One user, known as Man of Letters (@Letter_to_Jack), tweeted about the suspect’s arrest, revealing details of the investigation. He reported that operatives began by examining the suspect’s relationship with Christiana through their Instagram interactions.
Tracking the suspect’s cell phone activities and messages led authorities to his parents’ house in Ikorodu. The Nigerian Army’s 174th Battalion then confirmed his presence and arrested him.
Following the arrest, incriminating evidence was found, including Christiana’s blue ITEL A56 phone.
