Army arrests 15 oil thieves near Dangote Refinery

Troops of the Nigerian Army have apprehended 15 suspected oil thieves during a major operation in the Ibeju Lekki axis of Lagos State. The suspects were caught in the early hours of Friday while attempting to sabotage critical energy infrastructure.
The operation followed credible intelligence reports regarding illegal activities around a vessel supplying crude to the Dangote Refinery. Military officials confirmed that the suspects tried to tap into a discharge point during the delivery of crude oil.
Military foils attempt to sabotage fuel production
The vessel was reportedly discharging crude intended for the production of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). The suspects were intercepted just as they began connecting heavy-duty pipes to the refinery’s discharge point.
Headquarters 9 Brigade and the 65 Battalion carried out the joint operation to protect the massive industrial facility. This successful intervention highlights the military’s ongoing commitment to securing national assets and curbing the theft of natural resources.
Recovery of tankers and high-speed equipment
The Nigerian Army recovered several high-value items used in the illegal operation, including a Mack tanker truck and a Lexus RX 350 SUV. A Ford Ranger pick-up truck and a 40HP Yamaha speedboat engine were also found at the scene.
Other seized equipment included a pumping machine and multiple lengths of specialized hoses. The suspects and the recovered exhibits are currently in the custody of the 65 Battalion while further investigations continue.
