Amorim says Man United ‘not prepared’ for European football

A rebuild, not a comeback
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted the club isn’t ready to compete in European competitions this season. Speaking ahead of their EFL Cup clash against Grimsby Town, the former Sporting CP coach said the team needs more time to build a solid foundation.
Missing out on Europe — and a warning sign
United finished a disappointing 15th in the Premier League last season and blew their last shot at Europe after a 2–0 loss to Spurs in the Europa League final. The result shut the door on a Champions League return and exposed deep cracks in the squad’s development.
“We need time to prepare for every game”
In an interview with Sky Sports, Amorim didn’t sugarcoat the situation:
“I think we were not prepared to play in Europe. That is my feeling.
To have strong games in the Champions League and then play in the Premier League, we need time to develop as a team.”
His comments suggest United are prioritizing stability over rushing back into elite European competition.
Looking ahead: Grimsby up next
While European nights are off the table this season, United will continue their domestic campaign in the English Football League Cup, facing Grimsby Town at Blundell Park on Wednesday.
