Wike-backed PDP bloc summons emergency BoT, NEC meetings

Faction pushes for urgent intervention in escalating party crisis

The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Tuesday as the faction aligned with Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, announced emergency meetings of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Executive Committee (NEC).

The faction said the urgent meetings were necessary to address what it described as growing impunity, disregard for party constitution, and attempts to sideline critical stakeholders ahead of the controversial national convention scheduled by the party leadership.

The announcement comes amid heightened tensions within the PDP, with opposing blocs openly clashing over control of party structures and the legality of Saturday’s convention.

Faction alleges hijack of party organs

Leaders of the Wike-backed bloc accused the current national leadership of manipulating processes and sidelining statutory organs of the party.

According to a statement circulated late Tuesday, the faction insisted that convening an emergency BoT and NEC meeting is the only way to avert what they described as “a looming breakdown of order” within the party.

A senior member of the bloc, who spoke to journalists under anonymity, said the meetings would focus on reviewing the legality of recent decisions, examining the party’s readiness for a national convention, and addressing complaints of exclusion raised by several high-profile members.

He stressed that the PDP could not continue on its “current path of hurried decisions, factionalism, and disregard for internal checks and balances.”

Wike’s influence continues to shape party battles

Despite being a serving minister in an APC-led government, Nyesom Wike has remained a powerful and controversial figure within the PDP.

His loyalists argue that he remains a bona fide member of the party and has the right to mobilise structures and demand reform.
However, the opposing camp maintains that Wike’s involvement in the Tinubu administration makes his role in PDP affairs a conflict of interest, insisting that his faction is working to destabilise the party from within.

Political analysts say the latest move signals Wike’s determination to assert relevance ahead of the 2027 election cycle, where control of party machinery will be pivotal.

Party leadership dismisses factional move

The PDP national leadership swiftly dismissed the announced emergency meetings, describing them as null and void.

A party official who responded to inquiries said no authorised organ of the party had convened any such meetings, and that all legitimate activities were proceeding according to schedule.

He warned that the party would not tolerate “parallel structures or illegitimate gatherings designed to embarrass the PDP or mislead its members.”

Stakeholders divided as crisis widens

The development has further divided stakeholders across states, with some aligning with Wike’s call for intervention, while others insist the faction lacks the authority to summon statutory meetings.

Former governors, lawmakers, and former party officers have reportedly taken sides, deepening the internal rift.
Sources said the BoT remains split, with elderly statesmen urging caution and appealing for neutrality in the escalating feud.

Analysts warn of deeper consequences

Observers warn that if the crisis continues unchecked, the PDP risks entering Saturday’s proposed convention more fractured than ever before.

Some analysts predict parallel conventions or court injunctions, scenarios that could plunge the party into another prolonged leadership battle similar to those experienced during past election cycles.

A political commentator in Abuja noted that “the dearth of consensus and proliferation of power blocs is pushing the PDP toward a deeper identity crisis,” urging the party to prioritise reconciliation.

What lies ahead for the PDP?

With the Wike-backed faction pushing for emergency intervention and the official leadership insisting on its own authority, the PDP appears locked in a struggle that could define the party’s future.

As both sides dig in, party supporters and observers nationwide will be watching to see whether the leadership embraces dialogue — or whether the internal struggle escalates into yet another courtroom showdown.
