United States (US) officials announced on Tuesday that Donald Trump’s image will soon appear in certain US passports. This move shatters long-standing norms regarding the depiction of sitting leaders on official travel documents.
The State Department plans to release these limited-edition passports to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. A digital sample shows the president superimposed over the Declaration of July 4, 1776.
Gold signature features on commemorative documents
The new design includes the signature of the president rendered in gold ink. While the State Department has historically avoided partisan politics, this initiative puts a personal stamp on a core government service.
Spokesman Tommy Pigott confirmed that the passports will be available at in-person appointments in Washington. Officials stated that the commemorative documents would come at no additional cost to the applicants.
Democratic Party lawmakers criticize the initiative
Members of the rival Democratic Party have condemned the move, accusing the administration of indulging personal vanity. They argued that tax dollars should be spent on foreign policy rather than promotional materials.
Current US passports typically feature historic scenes like the Moon landing or the Statue of Liberty. This new development marks the first time a sitting US president will be featured in this manner.
