Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a 50 percent tariff on copper imports, set to take effect on August 1, 2025, citing national security concerns.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, “I am announcing a 50% TARIFF on Copper, effective August 1, 2025, after receiving a robust NATIONAL SECURITY ASSESSMENT.” The announcement is believed to reference an investigation initiated earlier this year by the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Copper, a vital material used in renewable energy infrastructure, electric vehicles, and various technologies, is considered critical to U.S. energy and industrial policy. The tariff is expected to impact international copper suppliers and potentially affect prices across industries dependent on the metal.
While further details of the national security assessment were not disclosed, the move marks a significant shift in U.S. trade policy regarding critical raw materials.
