Tony Elumelu shares how a big break at 27 shaped his career

A career-changing opportunity at 27

Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings and founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, has opened up about a turning point in his early career: becoming a bank branch manager at just 27 years old.

Looking back, Elumelu says the opportunity to lead a branch of the now-defunct AllStates Trust Bank gave him not just a title—but the confidence and perspective that would fuel everything that came after.

“Few believed a 27-year-old could lead a bank branch. But that opportunity changed the entire course of my life,” he said.

Banking in a time of transformation

In the 1990s, Nigeria’s banking sector was undergoing rapid change. For Elumelu, stepping into leadership during that time was more than a job—it was a launchpad.

“Banking was beginning to change the country… it was ripe for disruption,” he wrote. “It gave me confidence. It gave me a platform. Most importantly, it gave me perspective.”

That experience would shape not only his rise in the financial world but also his long-term vision for empowering Africa’s youth.

Why he backs young African entrepreneurs

Elumelu says the reason he invests in the next generation through the Tony Elumelu Foundation is deeply personal. Someone believed in him early on—and now, he’s paying that forward.

“That’s why today, I’m passionate about giving young people the same chance I was given,” he explained. “My journey didn’t begin with capital. It began with trust.”

Through his foundation, Elumelu has helped fund and mentor thousands of young African entrepreneurs, aiming to unlock talent and drive economic transformation across the continent.

A message to Africa’s youth

Elumelu’s message is clear: young Africans don’t need to wait for permission to lead.

“Let’s keep believing in Africa’s youth. They are ready to lead, grow, and transform our continent.”
