Tinubu warns judiciary that justice must never be for sale

President urges judges to defend integrity of the courts

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a strong caution to members of the judiciary, insisting that justice must never be influenced, compromised, or sold under any circumstances.

Speaking at a high-level legal stakeholders’ gathering in Abuja, the President said Nigeria’s democratic progress depends heavily on the credibility and fairness of its judicial system. According to him, judges carry the weight of national trust, and any deviation from integrity weakens the entire governance structure.

Tinubu stressed that no democracy can thrive when citizens believe verdicts go to the highest bidder rather than being grounded in law and facts.

Judiciary urged to confront corruption and delays

The President acknowledged the pressures faced by judges, including overwhelming case volumes and systemic bottlenecks, but maintained that ethical lapses and corrupt practices cannot be excused.

He urged judicial officers to recommit themselves to impartiality, transparency, and the timely resolution of cases, saying these values are central to boosting public confidence.

Tinubu noted that complaints from Nigerians about prolonged adjournments, conflicting judgments, and allegations of inducements must be taken seriously.

“We must confront these issues head-on if we want a justice system that works for all, not just the powerful,” he said.

Government promises support for judicial reforms

The President also reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to support broad judicial reforms, including improved funding, better infrastructure, digital court processes, and enhanced welfare for judicial officers.

He said the reforms are designed to reduce loopholes that encourage corruption, speed up case processing, and ensure a modern justice system aligned with global standards.

Tinubu explained that a better-equipped judiciary is a stronger judiciary, but insisted that no amount of government support can replace personal integrity on the part of judges.

Stakeholders applaud call for accountability

Several senior legal practitioners at the event welcomed the President’s remarks, saying they reflect the urgent need to rebuild trust in Nigeria’s courts.

They noted that recent high-profile political and corruption cases have drawn public scrutiny, making it even more important for judicial officers to demonstrate independence and ethical discipline.

Civil society groups also emphasised that the fight against corruption must include strict sanctions for judges found guilty of misconduct, adding that the judiciary must remain a sanctuary of fairness.

Citizens demand fairness for all Nigerians

Across social media, many Nigerians have reacted to the President’s comments, with users calling for a justice system that works not only for politicians but for everyday citizens facing issues such as unlawful detention, land disputes, police brutality, and business-related conflicts.

Analysts say the public response underscores the belief that an impartial judiciary is essential for national stability and investor confidence.

Tinubu calls for a united defence of justice

Concluding his remarks, Tinubu urged all stakeholders—judges, lawyers, law enforcement agencies, and citizens—to protect the sanctity of justice.

He said justice must never be influenced by wealth, power, ethnicity, or political loyalty, adding that the judiciary must reinforce its role as the final refuge for truth and fairness.

“Once justice becomes a commodity, the nation loses its soul,” the President warned.
