Tinubu reaffirms commitment to Police reform, urges professionalism and integrity

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to transforming the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies, emphasizing professionalism, community partnership, and the adoption of modern policing methods.

Speaking at the second edition of the Police Award and Commendation Ceremony held in Abuja, Tinubu—represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio—highlighted the need for continued investment in technology, training, and officer welfare.

“My administration remains steadfast in its commitment to the transformation of the Nigeria Police Force and, indeed, other security agencies,” Tinubu stated.

“We understand that modern policing demands modern tools, continuous training, intelligence-led strategies, and community partnership. We will continue to invest in cutting-edge equipment, technological support, capacity-building programmes, and welfare schemes to boost professional efficiency and morale.”

The President also issued a firm call to action to police officers across the country, urging them to uphold the public trust and maintain the highest standards of integrity.

“The power you wield is not for intimidation but for protection. It is not for abuse but for service to your fatherland,” he said, warning against misconduct and corruption.

Tinubu congratulated the award recipients and encouraged them to remain role models within the Force. “You have made the nation and your families proud. Let this recognition spur you to even greater heights,” he said.

The event took a somber yet inspiring turn with the recognition of ACP Aniedi Cecilia Udoh, who died in active service in May 2024. She was posthumously honoured as the Community Policing Advocate of the Year. Senate President Akpabio announced a personal donation of ₦5 million to her family and praised her dedication and sacrifice.

Akpabio also highlighted his long-standing support for the police dating back to his time as Governor of Akwa Ibom State. His contributions included 350 patrol vehicles, marine platforms, armored carriers, and police infrastructure. As Senate President, he noted, 10 new police stations have been completed in his senatorial district.

“I am not tired of supporting the police. On behalf of the National Assembly, I assure you we will stop at nothing to appropriate the necessary funds to improve the welfare and capacity of the Police,” Akpabio said.

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in his welcome remarks, emphasized that police transformation is a continuous and collective effort.

“The transformation of the Nigeria Police Force is not a slogan—it is a commitment. This occasion is not just about laurels; it is about legacy. Policing is not transactional. It is transformational,” he said.

Egbetokun reaffirmed the central role of citizens in policing, noting that the people remain the police’s most critical partners in achieving safety and justice.

The ceremony concluded with a renewed call for integrity, accountability, and sustained reform in Nigeria’s security sector.
