Rivers State back to normal after 6-month emergency
President Bola Tinubu has officially ended the state of emergency in Rivers State, nearly six months after it was declared. In a statement released Wednesday, the Presidency confirmed that all key government officials in the state can now return to work.
Fubara resumes duty September 18
Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who was suspended when the emergency was declared, has been directed to resume office on Thursday, September 18. Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Odu and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including Speaker Martins Amaewhule, are also expected to return to their roles on the same day.
Tinubu: “It gives me great pleasure…”
Announcing the end of the emergency, Tinubu said, “It therefore gives me great pleasure to declare that the emergency in Rivers State of Nigeria shall end with effect from midnight today.”
Rivers State, one of Nigeria’s major oil-producing regions, has been under emergency rule since March 2025 due to political instability.
