The Eagle Online founder Dotun Oladipo dies at 56 after sudden illness

Dotun Oladipo, founder and managing editor of Eagle Online, has died at the age of 56.

Oladipo took ill suddenly in his office on Tuesday and died hours later at the hospital to which he had driven himself. His death was confirmed by the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), of which he was a former president.

GOCOP president Danlami Nmodu announced the passing on the guild’s platform late on Tuesday: “It has just been confirmed that Emeritus President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, died today. May his soul rest in peace.”

He was also founding president of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society (IMPCMS). General Secretary Nkanu Egbe announced the death on Wednesday morning, stating that Oladipo passed away on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, in Lagos.

Egbe said he had led the cooperative with dedication alongside a journalism career spanning nearly three decades, and described the loss as devastating to both IMPCMS and Nigerian journalism. Funeral arrangements, condolence visits and interim leadership matters will be communicated later.

Oladipo was chief executive of Premium Eagle Media Limited and a former politics editor at PUNCH Newspapers. He also worked with Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass and The Sun before founding Eagle Online.

The suddenness of the illness and the fact that he drove himself to hospital underscore how quickly a working day can become a final one. Colleagues in online publishing and the cooperative he helped build now face the practical tasks of succession and commemoration.

His career arc—from legacy newsrooms to founding a digital title and leading professional bodies—places him among the generation that moved Nigerian political reporting onto the web. Burial details, when released, will give the industry a formal moment to mark that contribution.
