Textile workers union defends Oshiomhole amid NUPENG criticism

The ongoing discord within Nigeria’s labour movement has escalated as the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) publicly defended former Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

This follows a scathing verbal attack on him by the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).

NUPENG’s harsh remarks draw union backlash

NUPENG recently lashed out at Oshiomhole over his comments concerning the industrial dispute between Dangote Refinery and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN). The oil workers’ union accused Oshiomhole of betrayal, even likening him to a “Judas Iscariot” of the working class — an expression that has since sparked outrage in some labour circles.

In a swift response, NUTGTWN issued a formal statement signed by its President, Peters Adeyemi Godonu, and General Secretary, Issa Aremu Ali Baba, strongly condemning the remarks from NUPENG. The textile union described the criticism as both “unnecessary and unwarranted.”

Oshiomhole’s right to speak as a labour elder statesman

Highlighting Oshiomhole’s long-standing service to Nigeria’s labour movement, the textile workers union emphasized that the former Edo State governor and ex-NLC president has earned the right to contribute to national discussions—especially those affecting workers.

“As an affiliate of NLC, we express deep concern over the recent attacks by NUPENG on Comrade Adams Oshiomhole,” the statement read. “Oshiomhole, as a respected leader, has a responsibility to comment on matters relating to industrial relations, workers’ rights, and the economy.”

The union recalled Oshiomhole’s distinguished record, including his time as the General Secretary of NUTGTWN, two-term NLC President, a member of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Governing Board, a former state governor, and now a Senator of the Federal Republic.

The dispute between Dangote Refinery and PENGASSAN

The conflict that triggered this controversy stems from the ongoing industrial disagreement between PENGASSAN and Dangote Refinery. Oshiomhole had reportedly urged both sides to engage in dialogue and emphasized the need to protect workers’ rights while promoting national productivity. His remarks, however, were met with hostility by NUPENG.

The textile union believes Oshiomhole’s intervention was well-intentioned and aimed at fostering industrial harmony. “His comments were clearly in the interest of peace, productivity, and protection of labour rights,” the union noted.

A call for unity and respect within the labour movement

NUTGTWN cautioned against public verbal attacks within the labour community, urging all unions to exercise maturity, mutual respect, and internal consultation.

“Disagreements should not lead to disrespect, especially towards leaders who have devoted their lives to advancing the cause of Nigerian workers,” the statement continued. “We call on NUPENG and other unions in the oil and gas sector to embrace the values of solidarity and avoid actions that can fracture the movement.”

Honouring Oshiomhole’s legacy

In a significant show of support, the textile workers union announced plans to officially rename its national secretariat in Kaduna after Adams Oshiomhole. This move, they say, recognizes his decades of service and outstanding leadership in the labour sector.

“Our union stands firmly with Comrade Adams Oshiomhole,” the statement concluded. “We reaffirm our unwavering respect for his principled leadership, courage, and lifelong commitment to Nigerian workers.”

A broader implication for Nigeria’s labour unity

This public exchange highlights deeper tensions within Nigeria’s labour ecosystem. As the nation grapples with economic challenges, unity among worker unions remains crucial for effectively advocating for fair wages, safe working conditions, and social justice.

Observers warn that internal disputes such as this may weaken the collective voice of labour at a time when workers are facing significant inflation, job insecurity, and reduced purchasing power.
