Taraba governor reveals sister was killed by police escort, calls for justice

Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has disclosed that his sister, Atsi Kefas, was killed by one of the police escorts in the vehicle they were traveling in not by bandits as earlier reported.

Speaking publicly on the incident for the first time during a town hall meeting marking his second year in office, the governor cited a preliminary police report which revealed that Atsi died from severe gunshot wounds inflicted by a police officer. He assured the public that investigations were ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragic incident and to ensure that justice is served.

“Preliminary police report revealed that she died as a result of severe gunshot injuries sustained from shots by one of the police escorts in the vehicle,” Kefas stated. “Investigation is still ongoing to ascertain the circumstances so that justice will prevail.”

The revelation marks a significant departure from earlier accounts in December 2024, which suggested that Atsi was killed by bandits along the Wukari–Kente Road. The governor had remained silent on the issue until now.

Despite the personal loss, Kefas used the occasion to reaffirm his commitment to public service and leadership. “Even in personal tragedy, such as the loss of my sister, I remain strong because the call to serve you outweighs the pain,” he said.

He called for a minute of silence in honor of Atsi and others who died in the Karim Lamido crisis, urging citizens to unite in rebuilding the state.

“In these two years, you can agree with me that Taraba is no longer at the sideline. We are leading with discipline, technology and good heart,” he declared. “This is your Taraba. Let us rise together and believe again.”

Governor Kefas also reiterated his vision for governance driven by results, not sentiment, adding that every programme under his administration must deliver real value to the people.
