Bashir El-Rufai hints Peter Obi might join SDP ahead of 2027 elections

On Monday, March 10, Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, hinted that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, might join the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
This comes as Bashir surprisingy suggested that Obi is “not a bad person after all,” signaling a shift in his views.
Bashir made these comments after his father’s departure from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The hint came in response to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by user @Freedom42602077, who argued that the SDP would struggle to defeat the APC in the 2027 elections unless it aligns with Obi.
“Bro to bro, if Peter Obi is not in that party, they can’t win the presidential election. APC will have it again!” the user wrote.
Bashir El-Rufai’s simple reply was: “He is coming.”
In another post, Bashir added, “Peter Obi is surprisingly not a bad person after all. My views on him have changed recently. My mind was poisoned by my former party members. Sai Obi!”
His remarks have sparked speculations about possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, raising questions about whether Obi might indeed be considering a move to the SDP.
This development comes shortly after his father, Nasir El-Rufai, made headlines with his resignation from the APC, citing a growing disconnect between his values and the party’s direction under President Bola Tinubu.
