Reno Omokri mocks El-Rufai’s defection to SDP, questions his electoral impact

On Monday, March 10, former presidential aide Reno Omokri criticized Nasir El-Rufai’s recent move to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), questioning his electoral influence and downplaying the importance of his departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Omokri pointed to APC’s poor performance in Kaduna State during the 2023 elections under El-Rufai’s leadership. He noted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the presidential election, all three senatorial seats, and 10 out of 16 House of Representatives seats in the state, while the APC secured only four.
Omokri added, “If Malam Nasir El-Rufai performed so woefully at the polls as an incumbent governor, why should anyone lose sleep over him leaving the APC for the SDP, which died in 1993 and has been in the mortuary pending burial in 2027?”
He also took aim at El-Rufai’s controversial tenure, calling him the “Butcher of Kaduna” and accusing him of being complicit in the crises in Southern Kaduna and the Shiite clashes.
Sarcastically, Omokri wished El-Rufai luck in his “fourth political party since 1999,” suggesting that any state seeking the same level of turmoil as Southern Kaduna under his rule could support the SDP in 2027.
El-Rufai, who recently resigned from the APC and pledged his allegiance to the SDP, has not yet responded to Omokri’s comments. However, his defection has sparked widespread political discussions as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
