Super Wirtz bags hattrick as Leverkusen clinches first-ever Bundesliga title with five games to go

Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen has been confirmed as the 2023/24 Bundesliga champion after a 5-0 shellacking of Werder Bremen, despite there still being five games in the league season to go.

Leverkusen played the match on Sunday, April 14, and won comprehensively, with Florian Wirtz scoring a hattrick, despite coming on as a substitute.

Leverkusen remains 16 points clear at the top of the table, and with just five games left to play, there aren’t enough games left in the season for whoever is in second place, mathematically, to catch up with Xabi Alonso’s men, so they have been crowned champions.

Nigeria striker Victor Boniface was on target for the second game in a row in all competitions, as he converted a penalty in the 25th minute, opening the scoring for the home side.

The second goal of the game did not come until the second half when Granit Xhaka slammed home a goal in the 60th minute.

Substitute Wirtz stole the show though, as he came on at halftime for Amine Adli and scored his first goal of the game in the 68th minute. He doubled his tally in the 83rd minute, and completed his hattrick in the 90th minute.

This victory marks Leverkusen’s first ever Bundesliga title, and the champions will be chasing the Europa League title as well, as the club has a good chance of getting into the semifinal of the competition when they face West Ham United in the second leg of their quarterfinal tie this Thursday, April 18.
