Stanley Nwabali returns to Chippa United after personal tragedy forced football break
Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has returned to South African club Chippa United, five months after leaving the team by mutual consent.
The Eastern Cape club confirmed the goalkeeper’s return, bringing an end to months of speculation over his future.
Nwabali’s departure in February surprised many, especially after he had recently signed a new long-term contract with the club. At the time, he said the decision was necessary for his happiness but did not reveal the personal reasons behind it.
His representative, Mohammed Lawal, has now disclosed that the goalkeeper stepped away from football after losing three close family members within a short period.
According to Lawal, Nwabali first lost his grandmother before his father, Godspower Nwabali, died shortly after Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic. His mother, Grace Nwabali, also passed away on January 1, 2025.
The emotional impact of those losses prompted the goalkeeper to take a break from football to focus on his mental well-being.
Lawal said Nwabali deliberately kept the reasons for his absence private, adding that he was not ready to discuss his personal struggles publicly.
“There were many offers for him, but Stanley decided he wasn’t ready to return to football. He needed time to grieve and recover mentally,” Lawal explained.
He added that several clubs from Saudi Arabia, England and Africa showed interest in signing the goalkeeper, but Nwabali declined because he wanted to return only when he felt fully prepared.
Lawal also revealed that Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle remained in regular contact with the goalkeeper throughout his time away and supported his recovery.
According to him, Chippa United’s understanding of Nwabali’s situation made the club the ideal place for him to restart his career.
The representative said the club’s chairman maintained a positive relationship with the goalkeeper throughout his break, making it possible for both parties to reunite.
Nwabali rose to prominence with his performances for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and will now look to rebuild his career as he resumes competitive football with Chippa United.
