Slot admits ‘superhuman’ Salah was unhappy after being benched

Liverpool manager praises mo salah’s professionalism despite disappointment
Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirmed on Tuesday that star forward Mohamed Salah was unhappy about being left out of the starting lineup for the team’s crucial 2-0 victory against West Ham.
Slot, however, coupled his admission with high praise for the Egyptian forward’s exceptional attitude and professionalism. Salah was an unused substitute at the London Stadium on Sunday, a decision made by the boss as he shuffled the team.
The move followed a particularly rough patch for Liverpool, who had suffered nine defeats in 12 games across all competitions. Slot’s decision to drop the 33-year-old came during a slump in form for the typically prolific attacker. Salah has so far only managed to score four Premier League goals this season, a stark contrast to his tally of 29 goals last season which earned him the prestigious Golden Boot award.
Salah called “superhuman” but in a human phase
Speaking to reporters, Slot described Salah’s overall contribution during his time at Anfield as being that of a “superhuman being.” He qualified his recent decision by acknowledging that even the world’s best players go through difficult periods. The manager suggested that Salah, like any other player, was simply going through a “phase” where he was momentarily “human.”
Slot quickly backed his star, stating that Salah has scored an immense number of goals for the club and expressed confidence in his future output. The Dutchman admitted he was not surprised by the player’s adverse reaction to being benched, viewing it as a completely “normal reaction” for a player of his caliber. Slot added that he had managed to handle the situation mildly, mindful of Salah’s outstanding years of service to the club.
Maintaining top professionalism despite being dropped
The Liverpool boss further emphasized that Salah was “not the only one who wasn’t happy” about not starting the pivotal game. Slot praised the forward for controlling his emotions and maintaining his discipline, highlighting the level of professionalism required to perform at the highest standard. He explained that a player cannot be available every three days and consistently deliver excellence if they allow themselves to be governed by their immediate emotions.
Slot stressed that “Mo is so disciplined” and understands what is required to remain fit and at the top of his game. He noted that regardless of his form, or whether he is playing or sitting out, Salah will “always be that top professional.” The manager’s comments sought to swiftly extinguish any speculation of a rift between the player and the new management team.
AFCON preparations and international talks
The manager also confirmed that Salah is scheduled to leave the club soon to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with his departure slated for December 15. Slot indicated that complex discussions are ongoing regarding the player’s commitment, involving multiple parties. He stated that the negotiations always involve the player himself, his nation—Egypt in this instance—and the club.
The core of these tripartite discussions revolves around determining “what is best for all three” stakeholders involved. These talks are crucial for managing Salah’s fitness and availability during the busy period leading up to the tournament. Slot’s immediate focus remains on securing a win against Sunderland on Wednesday, as his eighth-placed team looks to climb the table.
