Singer Ruger reveals childhood heartbreak sparked his ‘toxicity’ at age six

Nigerian Afrobeats star Michael Adebayo Olayinka, popularly known as Ruger, has disclosed that his emotional “toxicity” began at the tender age of six, following a childhood heartbreak.
Speaking during an interview on the Bro Bants podcast, the 25-year-old Asiwaju crooner recounted falling for an older woman who affectionately called him her “boyfriend.” Ruger said the innocent flirtation led him to believe they were in a relationship until he witnessed the woman in bed with another man.
“I was just six years old. I got heartbroken because one day I saw some guy smashing her through her window. I cried. I was traumatised. That experience broke my heart,” he said.
He added that the emotional pain drove him to sing Imagine That by Styl-Plus, a heartbreak anthem from the early 2000s, marking the moment he became “toxic.”
The singer’s confession comes months after he announced his desire to abandon his “playboy” persona and settle down before the end of 2025. In a February post on Snapchat, Ruger wrote, “Everybody is just getting married. Got me questioning myself… I am settling down this year, period.”
In 2024, Ruger also expressed romantic interest in DJ Cuppy, daughter of billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, sparking conversations among fans.
Known for his signature eye patch and bold lyrics, Ruger’s revelation sheds light on the personal experiences that have shaped his music and personality over the years.
