On Monday, May 5, a frightening event took place on the Kontagora–Minna highway, when around 300 suspected bandits on motorcycles, carrying powerful weapons, were seen crossing between Kampanin Bobby and Wamba in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.
The scary sight happened in the afternoon, and many drivers and travelers quickly rushed to find a safe place.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bandits, who are thought to have come from Zamfara State, moved freely toward Mashegu Local Government Area. They did not seem to encounter any security forces along the way.
One driver said, “There were no security officers around to help during the incident.”
Abbas Kasuwa Garba, the chairman of Mariga Local Government, confirmed what had happened. He mentioned that teams from both the police and the military had been sent to the area to protect the people.
Sadly, two local vigilantes from Wamba who tried to stop the bandits were killed. Another person was hurt and is receiving treatment.
It was also reported that soldiers stationed at Beri camp have been sent out to confront the bandits.
As of the time of this report, attempts to reach the police for further comment were unsuccessful.
