Seyi Law apologises over comment on Nigeria’s security

Popular Nigerian comedian Seyi Law has apologised for claiming that Nigeria is safer now than it was 10 years ago, describing his remark as insensitive.

The comedian, known for his support for President Bola Tinubu, had faced backlash after making the statement amid growing concerns over terrorism and kidnapping across the country. Many Nigerians criticised him online, accusing him of downplaying the security situation because of his perceived closeness to the ruling party.

In an apology video posted on Instagram, Seyi Law said he regretted the comment, which he made on the Honest Bunch podcast.

“My fellow Nigerians, I owe you this and more. I’m sincerely sorry for such an insensitive statement that I made on the Honest Bunch podcast. I’m not someone who would be too proud or very insensitive to apologise when he makes mistakes,” he said.

He added that upon reflection, he realised the statement was hurtful to victims of insecurity and their families.

“I had looked at that statement and I think it is quite insensitive to those who have had an issue with kidnapping, relatives being killed and all that. I want to sincerely and unreservedly tender an apology to those who that statement has hurt. I believe that statement is very insensitive,” he said.

The comedian also called on President Tinubu to take the security of Nigerians more seriously.
