Senate pays tribute to fallen soldiers, pledges more support for Nigerian Army

The Senate has paid tribute to Nigeria’s fallen soldiers, describing them as true heroes who demonstrated exceptional courage, military professionalism, and unwavering patriotism.
This comes following the death of Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Saidu Paiko and several other soldiers in a recent military operation in Borno State. The soldiers were killed in action during a counter-insurgency operation, underscoring the continued risks and sacrifices faced by troops in the country’s ongoing fight against terrorism and insecurity.
Senate committee extends condolences to Nigerian Army
In a statement issued on Sunday, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’adua (APC, Katsina Central), who chairs the Senate Committee on Army, expressed his condolences to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, as well as the families of the deceased soldiers.
“On behalf of the Senate Committee on Army, I extend our heartfelt condolences to you, the Nigerian Army, and the families of the gallant officers and soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” Yar’adua said.
The committee praised the fallen soldiers for their bravery and commitment, noting that their service represented the highest form of loyalty to the nation.
Senate reaffirms commitment to troop welfare
Senator Yar’adua used the opportunity to reaffirm the Senate’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Army, especially in the areas of troop welfare and operational capacity.
“We will work tirelessly to provide adequate resources and support to the Nigerian Army in its quest to maintain peace and security in our great nation,” he stated.
He stressed that the Senate understands the immense challenges faced by soldiers on the front lines and is determined to back legislative measures that will enhance their operational effectiveness, provide better equipment, and improve their living and working conditions.
Sacrifice of soldiers will not be forgotten
The Senate Committee on Army emphasized that the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen soldiers would not be forgotten. According to Senator Yar’adua, these brave men and women have laid down their lives to protect the country’s sovereignty and secure the safety of millions of Nigerians.
“Their dedication to duty is a reminder of the price of peace and the responsibility we all share in ensuring that their efforts are not in vain,” he said.
The committee also offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the fallen heroes and comfort for their families. “May Almighty Allah grant them Jannatul Firdaus and comfort their loved ones during this difficult time,” Yar’adua added.
National reflection on military sacrifice
The tragic loss in Borno State has reignited national reflection on the role of the armed forces in safeguarding Nigeria from persistent security threats such as terrorism, banditry, and insurgency.
Security analysts have continued to stress the importance of improved welfare, strategic equipment, and sustained funding for the military as part of a broader strategy to maintain peace and stability.
The Senate has repeatedly pledged to support policies and budgetary allocations that will strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture, while ensuring that the families of fallen soldiers receive the benefits and recognition they deserve.
Call for unity and continued support
Senator Yar’adua also called on Nigerians to stand united in honoring the memory of the fallen heroes and supporting the armed forces.
“These soldiers gave their lives so that others may live in peace. Their courage should inspire us all to work together to build a safer, more prosperous Nigeria,” he said.
The statement concluded with a reassurance that the Senate would continue to collaborate with the executive arm of government, the Nigerian Army, and other security agencies to address ongoing security challenges across the country.
Looking ahead: Strengthening military capacity
The tribute by the Senate comes at a time when Nigeria faces evolving security threats. The legislative arm is expected to play a critical role in ensuring adequate funding, oversight, and policy support for the armed forces.
Analysts believe that honoring fallen soldiers must go beyond ceremonial statements, calling for concrete measures to support active-duty personnel and their families.
As the nation mourns its heroes, the Senate’s message reflects both grief and determination — a resolve to ensure that their sacrifice will continue to inspire national unity, security reforms, and stronger military capacity.
