Safaricom teams up with Cloudflare, Copycat to offer affordable cybersecurity for Kenyan businesses

On Thursday, October 17, Safaricom announced a new partnership with Cloudflare, a global web infrastructure and cybersecurity provider, and Copycatgroup, a technology provider in Africa. This collaboration aims to protect businesses in Kenya from data breaches and modern cyber threats.

The partnership focuses on delivering affordable and reliable digital security solutions specifically for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Kenya. “Businesses can subscribe to the cloud-based cybersecurity plans of their choice online, starting at KES 5,000 per site per month, with services operational in hours,” Safaricom stated.

Safaricom highlighted Cloudflare’s impressive processing capacity of over 248TB, which is “30 times more than any other provider in the market.”

Cynthia Kropac, Safaricom’s Chief Enterprise Business Officer, noted that this partnership is redefining how MSMEs in Kenya protect themselves in the digital world with enterprise-grade solutions. She emphasized that affordability and accessibility to comprehensive cybersecurity tools are at the heart of this initiative, ranging from basic protection to advanced options.

“By leveraging Cloudflare’s solutions, such as zero-trust services and email security hosted locally in data centers within Kenya, we are investing in a future-proof infrastructure that provides every customer with strong protection against cyber threats,” Kropac added.

This announcement comes just ahead of Safaricom’s upcoming Cybersecurity Summit, where more details about the partnership will be revealed.

Graham Turnbull, Managing Executive at Cloudflare, expressed that this partnership brings effective digital security solutions closer to business owners. Vishal Patel, Managing Director at Copycat, noted that businesses of all sizes will benefit from enterprise-grade protection, allowing them to scale confidently with secure and reliable digital infrastructure.

In another initiative aimed at supporting business owners, Safaricom partnered with Pezesha, a Kenyan fintech, in June 2024. This collaboration offers a new credit option for small business owners, enabling them to borrow money directly through their M-PESA business accounts. This offering complements Safaricom’s existing loan products like M-Shwari and Fuliza.

These efforts are part of Safaricom’s strategy to onboard more businesses. The company reported earnings of KSh 139.9 billion ($1.07 billion) before interest and tax, exceeding market expectations. It identified customer segmentation, public sector digitization, and investments in new technologies as key drivers of its success.
