Protest: NSCDC admits no vandalism has been reported in FCT

Dr. Olusola Odumosu, Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has announced that there have been no reports of vandalism targeting Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) during the ongoing protests in the territory.

Dr. Odumosu made this statement following an inspection of key national assets and infrastructure in Abuja on Friday. His inspection included railway stations in Wupa, Kukwaba 1 and 2, Bassanjiwa, Gwagwa, and Idu, as well as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Headquarters, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company in Wuse, the FCT Water Board in Asokoro, and the Abuja Central Mosque.

The commandant praised the protesters for their restraint, noting that no damage had been reported at the railway stations during the first day of protests. However, he indicated that the second day of protests is still ongoing.

Dr. Odumosu stated, “We discovered that none of the railway corridors were tampered with by miscreants during the day-one protest, but day-two is still ongoing.

“We have a collective duty to protect CNAI, as these amenities were provided with our common wealth.”

He emphasized that while peaceful protest is a fundamental right, the NSCDC will not tolerate any actions aimed at damaging government properties or installations. Dr. Odumosu expressed concern over attacks on motorists in the Lugbe area and the burning of private vehicles in Nyanya on Thursday.

During his visit to the Idu railway station, Engr. Joseph Akinteye, Director of Transport for the FCT Administration, commended the NSCDC personnel for their effectiveness in securing the railway stations. Akinteye remarked, “We have not had any case of vandalism in a long while, which demonstrates the commitment of your men in protecting critical infrastructure in the FCT.”
