PROFOH marks World Humanitarian Day 2026, calls for solidarity and protection of aid workers

Professionals For Humanity (PROFOH) has issued a press statement marking World Humanitarian Day 2026, observed on 19 August under the global theme “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities.”
The organisation highlighted the urgent need to protect humanitarian workers so they can safely deliver aid in conflict zones and disaster areas. It also called for greater accountability for those who attack aid workers.
PROFOH outlined three core pillars of this year’s campaign:
– Honouring the Fallen and Their Families – recognising the sacrifices of thousands of registered and unregistered aid workers killed over the past three years, with a special focus on supporting the families they left behind.
– Protection of Health Infrastructure – demanding an end to the sharp rise in targeted attacks on health workers, hospitals, patients and emergency medical transport.
– Upholding International Law – urging states to use concrete legal and diplomatic tools to investigate attacks, end impunity and prosecute those who target neutral aid operations.
The organisation announced that it is expanding its humanitarian work into new locations. PROFOH is currently mobilising relief materials and cash donations for communities affected by recent earthquakes in Venezuela, the Philippines, Japan and Colombia.
PROFOH also expressed appreciation to the United States for remaining the world’s leading international humanitarian donor, with the European Union in second place, and called on other countries to follow their example.
In the statement, Executive Director Dr. Gbemuotor Kama noted that PROFOH, now in its 28th year, continues its work in healthcare, safe drinking water, education and climate sustainability. The organisation is incorporated in 11 countries and maintains an active presence in 21 others.
