Police warn against protests around Aso rock, cite court order

The Nigeria Police Force has warned groups planning to protest for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu against holding demonstrations around the Aso Rock area and its environs.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, issued the warning in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, citing a recent order by the Federal High Court restraining protests in the area.
According to Hundeyin, the court, in a suit between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Omoyele Sowore & four others on October 17, barred any protest within and around Aso Rock Villa, including the National Assembly Complex, Force Headquarters, Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and Shehu Shagari Way.
He cautioned intending protesters and counter-protest groups to steer clear of restricted zones and avoid actions that could provoke confrontation or disrupt public order.
Hundeyin said the police would ensure free movement, protection of lives and property, and the safety of law-abiding citizens during the period. He warned that anyone who exploits protests to incite violence, vandalize property, or carry weapons would face arrest and prosecution under relevant laws, including those relating to terrorism.
He added that individuals inciting unrest via social media would also be tracked, investigated, and prosecuted using digital evidence.
Hundeyin said the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, had directed the Commissioner of Police in charge of the FCT and other operational commands to strictly enforce the court’s order.
